The Samsung S8300 UltraTOUCH was introduced this past February at the 2009 Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona. Since that time, it has gone on sale in some European markets. In the UK it is known as the Tocco Ultra Edition, and in France, the Player Ultra. No matter what you call it, though, it is a beautiful phone with some really high end components inside that are bound to get attention.
Physical Aspects
In terms of physical design, there are few cell phones on the market today that are as well designed and overall attractive as the Samsung S8300 Ultra Touch. The build quality is very solid, and we were really impressed by the way the slider maintains its shape even when slid open, unlike many sliders on the market that have somewhat ugly, visible openings on the back when the camera is exposed.
When a great physical design is paired up with a stunning 2.8-inch, 400x240 pixel AMOLED(
INFO) display, things get even better. The S8300's display is, in a word, brilliant. It also offers the benefits of a capacitive touchscreen(
INFO) in that it responds to very light finger touches. There is, quite possibly, no better looking display on the market right now.
The only real issue I have with the design of the Tocco Ultra Edition is the lock button. It is located too closely to the camera shutter button, and is small and somewhat difficult to activate. The rest of the keys, including the 12-key keypad and two-stage camera shutter button, all work well. The micro-USB port, and its cover, are also well done.
The S8300 Ultra Touch weighs 123.5g (4.4oz) and measures 110mm x 52mm x 13mm (4.3in x 2.0in x .5in) when closed.
